YOUDA: An assassin sentenced to death in the United States has applied for the death penalty through a firing squad instead of a lethal injection.

The first convict to be sentenced to death in the US state of Nevada for the first time in 15 years has requested that he be executed by firing squad instead of injecting poison.

Zen Michael Floyd’s lawyers say his client’s request is not a delaying tactic, but rather a less painful form of execution by firing squad. Federal Sanitation Attorney Brad Levinson said Michael Floyd wanted to avoid the government’s three lethal injections for the death penalty.

According to foreign media, the defense lawyer said that in order to challenge the proposed method of death penalty, an alternative method has to be submitted to the court and in this regard, the most appropriate method for the death penalty is to shoot. It should be noted that the use of firing squad for execution is very low in the United States. The execution in this case could take place in June, while Michael Floyd’s lawyers are trying to stop it.

According to media reports, only three states in the United States currently allow the use of the death penalty by firing squad in Mississippi, Oklahoma and Ottawa, but it has not been used since 2010, while in Nevada since 2006. This will be the first death sentence.

Floyd, 45, was sentenced to death in 2000 for killing four people and injuring one in a Las Vegas supermarket in 1999. Floyd also pleaded guilty. However, he has appealed against his sentence several times, with lawyers saying he would appeal to the State Board of Amnesty in Nevada on June 22 for clemency.

On the other hand, in recent days, members of the Nevada State Assembly have supported the abolition of the death penalty. If the law is passed, the death penalty in the state will be commuted to life imprisonment.
