Thousands took to the streets to protest police brutality, damaging and vandalizing several government buildings, including the municipal headquarters.
Clashes broke out between police and protesters, who fired tear gas shells and water cannons at the protesters.
Chilean authorities say a police officer who opened fire on the artist has been arrested and an investigation is under way.
