Government demands resignation from Election Commission
ISLAMABAD: The government has demanded the resignation of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
In a press conference with Federal Ministers Shibli Faraz and Fawad Chaudhry, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood said that the Election Commission has failed and is not playing the role of a neutral empire so it should resign as a whole.
He said that people’s trust in the Election Commission has risen, a new Election Commission has been formed on which everyone has confidence.
He further said that the Chief Election Commissioner and the members of the Election Commission should resign immediately and the Parliament should be given an opportunity to form a new Election Commission, which should be trusted by all.
General elections will be held two and a half years later while by-elections are held but the Election Commission should be trusted.
Shafqat Mehmood said that PTI is the largest party in the National Assembly and Senate, it also does not have confidence in the Election Commission, if you ask other parties, they also seem to complain to the Election Commission.
He further said that no reference will be filed against the Election Commission.
Shafqat Mehmood said that the Prime Minister had demanded for a long time that the power of money should be lost in the elections. The Prime Minister wanted the Senate elections to be transparent through open ballot.
The Education Minister said that the Prime Minister has always said that the Senate election has to be cleansed from buying and selling of votes. In the Senate elections in 2018, the markets will be open again.
