Climate change threatens 95% of agricultural land barren, research report released
Helsinki: Experts warn of a one-third drop in global food production in the future due to climate change.
A research report published in the journal One Earth by experts from Alto University in Finland has identified climate change as a threat to global food production.
The report says that by the end of this century, 95% of the world’s arable land will be frozen or production will decline sharply.
Experts say global food production could fall by 33% if climate change continues unabated.
However, if emissions of the most harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide, are controlled, the catastrophic effects of climate change can be avoided and the risk of food shortages can be averted.
According to the study, there are 27 major countries or regions in the world that are affected by agriculture and grain production. However, agricultural production in 52 of the 177 countries will not be affected.
