Baghdad: Pope Francis’s historic meeting with Ayatollah Sistani
Meeting with religious leader Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani.
According to the AP, Pope Francis strongly condemned extremists in the name of religion during his historic visit.
Ayatollah Al-Sistani said in the meeting that Christians should have peace and security like other Iraqis and they should have all their constitutional rights.
It is noteworthy that Ayatollahs rarely avoid such meetings in general, but their meeting with the Pope lasted for about 50 minutes during which the two leaders continued to talk without masks.
It is also worth noting that Pope Francis’ earlier visit was postponed last year due to the coronavirus. The meeting was seen as a very symbolic moment during the Pope’s visit. This is Pope Francis’ first visit to Iraq, and his first international visit since the outbreak. Pope Francis himself is now 84 years old.
On his arrival in Iraq, Pope Francis also visited the ancient site of Ur, considered the birthplace of Abraham. Strict security arrangements were also made for the Pope’s visit to Iraq. About 10,000 Iraqi security forces were deployed.
